Petition to the U.S. Government:
Designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and Implement Sanctions to Protect Christians.
To: The President of the United States, The U.S. Secretary of State, and Members of Congress.
We, the undersigned, urgently call upon the United States Government to intervene on behalf of Christians being persecuted in Nigeria. The escalating violence and targeted attacks against Christian communities by radical Islamic terror groups such as ISIS, Boko Haram, and their affiliates have created a humanitarian crisis that demands immediate attention and action.
Since 2022, Nigeria has become the epicenter of global Christian persecution, with 90% of all Christian persecution deaths worldwide occurring within its borders. On average, 17 Christians are killed daily in Nigeria due to their faith. These alarming statistics reflect a systematic campaign of violence and terror designed to eradicate Christianity from the region.
The atrocities committed by ISIS and Boko Haram, including mass killings, kidnappings, and sexual violence, have devastated countless communities and displaced millions. Despite these ongoing atrocities, the Nigerian government has failed to provide adequate protection to its Christian citizens, leaving them vulnerable to continued attacks.
We urge the U.S. government to take the following actions:
- Designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC): This designation, under the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA), is reserved for nations engaged in severe violations of religious freedom. Designating Nigeria as a CPC will highlight the urgent need for international attention and pressure to address the crisis.
- Implement Sanctions on Nigeria: Until the Nigerian government takes substantial and verifiable steps to protect its Christian population, we call for the implementation of targeted sanctions. These sanctions should be aimed at individuals and entities within the Nigerian government and military who have failed to act or have been complicit in these violations.
The United States has a moral obligation to stand up for religious freedom and protect those who are persecuted for their faith. We believe that by taking these actions, the U.S. can play a pivotal role in stopping the violence and ensuring that Christians in Nigeria can live in safety and peace.
Together, we can make a difference. Stand with us in calling for immediate action to protect Christians in Nigeria.
